HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – June 27, 2018 – Teledyne Brown Engineering completed fabrication, assembly, and factory acceptance testing of two Active Worksite Interface (WIF) probe assemblies that arrived on the International Space Station (ISS) on May 24, 2018. The integrated Active WIF probes are nearly a foot long and consist of 120 pieces of stainless nickels, aerospace aluminum and brass. They were assembled on June 5, 2018, and inserted in external ISS WIF sockets by astronauts during Extra Vehicular Activities (EVA) on June 14, 2018. The Active WIF probes will support installation of new high-definition cameras to capture spacecraft docking with the International Space Station, including new American-made spacecraft with scheduled test flights later this year.

Other probe assemblies have been used for purposes such as supporting an astronaut’s Foot Restraint Platform to safely perform EVAs.

Leidos confirmed with NASA that the parts were safe for use and user friendly for astronauts, taking into consideration the limited mobility of spacesuits. Leidos performed the next stage assembly of the hardware, including integration with the booms and cameras, final functional testing and validation.

“Our team is proud to continue our work and support of NASA and the International Space Station alongside partners like Leidos to supply the most efficient hardware and systems achievable,” stated Jan Hess, President of Teledyne Brown Engineering.  “In 2017 we were involved in 22 ISS Payloads and we have seen considerable progress thus far in 2018.”
