TBE & PNNL Receive Award for One of World’s Most Innovative Scientific & Technological Breakthroughs | Photo

HUNTSVILLE, AL - December 06, 2019- Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE), in partnership with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is being honored with the R&D 100 Award for one of the world’s most innovative scientific and technological breakthroughs of the year.  The award is for the team’s development of the Xenon International monitoring system used to detect radioxenon isotopes.  

TBE and PNNL developed next generation radioxenon sampler technology for use at International Monitoring System stations in support of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The Xenon International system is a fully automated scientific instrument designed to collect, separate, purify, quantify, and perform nuclear counting of radioxenon isotopes indicative of nuclear explosions. The CTBT is a treaty that was opened for signature by the United Nations General Assembly in 1996 and bans all nuclear explosions, for both civilian and military purposes, in all environments.

Detection of xenon isotopes is a proven and important method for distinguishing nuclear explosions from earthquakes and detecting undeclared, underground testing. The Xenon International system incorporates key lessons learned during the previous 10-years of International Noble Gas Experiments.  The system enhances sensitivity to minor xenon isotopes, increases sampling frequency, expands system reliability and improves performance. Two prototypes of the system currently exist and are now undergoing performance testing.  

The R&D 100 award, issued by R&D World magazine and its parent company, WTWH Media, LLC., will be presented during a celebration on December 5th at the San Mateo Marriott near San Francisco, California.
