Jan Hess is President of the Engineered Systems Segment of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated and its 1,200 employees. She also serves as President of one of the companies in the Segment, Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc.
In her role as President of Engineered Systems, Hess has full responsibility for growth, profitability, and long-range strategic positioning of Teledyne Brown Engineering and three other Teledyne companies in the Segment – Teledyne Energy Systems, Inc.; Teledyne Turbine Engines; and Teledyne CML Composites. Serving the aerospace, defense, maritime, and energy markets, Engineered Systems develops and delivers an extraordinarily diverse set of technology driven solutions, products and services including small turbine engines for cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, radioisotope thermal electric generators for deep space, subsea and terrestrial applications, fuel cells, space propulsion systems, marine vehicles, hardware-in-the-loop test capabilities, engineering services, modeling and simulation, embedded software, and advanced manufacturing, among many others. Solutions, products, and services are generally delivered through large scale, multiyear programs.
Hess is leveraging Teledyne’s reputation for technological and performance excellence using her 30 plus years of domestic and international operational, financial and leadership experience to grow both the companies’ traditional government markets while harnessing the experience and innovation capacity of the workforce to expand into new markets.
Previously, Hess served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Teledyne Technologies’ Engineered Systems Segment; Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc.; and Teledyne Scientific and Imaging. In that position, she had both operational and administrative responsibilities, including domestic and international operations.
When Hess joined Teledyne Brown in 2000, she served as Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Hess was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Engineered Systems Segment and Teledyne Brown Engineering in 2007.
Prior to joining Teledyne Brown, she was Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer for Intergraph Computer Systems, a Division of Intergraph Corporation, Huntsville, Alabama. Responsible for the financial operations of this $250M hardware division. Hess served on the executive management team that restructured the division, creating a successful exit strategy for the company’s hardware operations. She was also involved in mergers and acquisitions.
From 1984 to 1998, Hess held various management positions with Intergraph, including Executive Manager and Assistant Controller. She led the company’s external financial reporting and analysis function. In her early career with Intergraph, Hess managed the International Financial Analysis organization, with over 30 international operations, and participated in various overseas assignments. From 1981 to 1983, Hess served on the audit staff of Price Waterhouse in Birmingham, Alabama.
Hess holds a B.S. in Accounting from Auburn University. She also holds a Certificate in Management from Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Virginia, and she is a Certified Public Accountant in Alabama (inactive). Hess has a professional designation in Advanced Government Contracting. Hess is also a graduate of Leadership Huntsville/Madison County and a member of its Alumni Association.
Hess is a public speaker to groups and organizations on the topics of corporate finance practices and successful business strategies, an advocate for children with learning challenges, and a community volunteer. She serves on for-profit and nonprofit boards of directors and is a member of the Huntsville Mayor’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Advisory Council. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County and serves on the Auburn University Huntsville Research Center Advisory Board. She has been honored by various organizations for her leadership in business and the community.
